Toitū Tairāwhiti – the second Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga prototype

On the 11th of May, Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) hosted over 80 people, including Ministers, manuhiri and iwi from Te Tairāwhiti, and officials from Te Puni Kōkiri, to publicly announce the Toitū Tairāwhiti prototype.

The Government signed a partnership with Toitū Tairāwhiti that will deliver 150 new homes for whānau, with $55 million of investment from the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga fund. This follows the signing of a partnership with Ka Uruora signed last month to deliver up to 172 new homes. 

This is part of the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga (to have a home, to have wellbeing) combines investment from Budget 2021 ($380m) and the Māori Infrastructure Fund ($350m) – the largest investment ever in Māori Housing. 

Manuhiri and iwi travelled from Gisborne to participate in the event, which shows how important this partnership is for their community. 

Dignitaries included Hon Minister Henare, Hon Minister Davidson, Hon Minister Jackson, Her Worship Gisborne Mayor Rehette Stolz and Her Worship Opotiki Mayor Lyn Riesterer. 

DCE, Tumuaki Te Kāhui Māori Housing, Kararaina says, “We are extremely proud to support the partnership with Toitū Tairāwhiti that will benefit the community. In MAIHI framework for action, we focused on strong partnerships. MAIHI Ka Ora and the Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga programme show this in fruition. In their development, Māori were clear that they wanted the Government to create space for Māori-led local solutions – especially when it came to delivering housing for their people on their whenua. Whai Kāinga Whai Oranga helps create that space to allow Māori housing solutions to thrive.”  

MAIHI Ka Ora 

Early this year HUD launched MAIHI Ka Ora – the National Māori Housing Strategy. This puts in place a long term plan that works in partnership with Māori to deliver on the vision that all whānau have safe, healthy affordable homes with secure tenure across the Māori continuum.  

This investment delivers on the promises HUD made in MAIHI Ka Ora – the National Māori Housing Strategy. To work in partnership with iwi and Māori, to increase housing supply that attends to whānau needs and deliver a better Māori housing future. 

The prototype will deliver up to 150 homes and is expected to be completed by 30 June 2024, with a focus to deliver as many as possible by June next year.
