The 2023/24 Annual Report for Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) was released yesterday. It provides an overview of what we worked on over the last financial year, highlights our achievements and details our performance and financial information.

Some highlights from the work progressed over 2023/24 include:

  • Going for Housing Growth: this new programme is part of the Government’s plan to tackle Aotearoa New Zealand’s ongoing housing shortage. It will enable more houses to be built, improve housing affordability and increase the supply of land for housing – inside and at the edge of our urban areas.
  • Changes to the Residential Tenancies Act: changes to the Act will improve tenancy laws and help increase the supply of rental properties.
  • Reducing the number of people in emergency housing through Target 8: in March 2024, the Government set a new target to end the large-scale and long-term use of motels for emergency housing, with an aim to reduce the number of households in emergency housing by 75 percent. This includes moving families with children out of emergency housing quicker and into permanent homes.
  • A review of Kāinga Ora: we supported the independent review of Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities with the final report being published in May. We will continue to work to respond to the findings in 2024/25.
