Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development consulted on the regulation of methamphetamine contamination in rental housing in November 2022. Consultation closed in March 2023.
A summary of the submissions received during the submission period has been published on our website.
The consultation gathered views on a range of regulatory proposals for managing methamphetamine contamination in rental houses. These included:
- regulated levels of methamphetamine residue, for example, the maximum acceptable level of residue that can be present, above which decontamination would be required
- requirements for landlords about when they need to test and decontaminate properties
- testing requirements, including what types of tests are acceptable and who can undertake testing
- the decontamination process, including what methods are acceptable and who can undertake works
- rules for managing abandoned goods on contaminated premises.
Most submitters agreed that there was a need for regulation of methamphetamine contamination in rental housing and agreed with the suggested objectives, scope and implementation in the discussion document.
The next steps are for HUD to provide advice to our Ministers.
