Consultation open for Order in Council allowing councils to use a streamlined planning process to support Cyclone recovery
Published 25 Jul 23
Consultation is open from Tuesday 25 July – Friday 28 July on the Order in Council issued under the Severe Weather Emergency Recovery Legislation Act 2023 (SWERLA).
Te Tūāpapa Kura Kāinga – Ministry of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) is consulting on a proposed temporary change to the process councils can follow to make changes to their plan in response to the effects of Cyclones Hale and Gabrielle and heavy rain events early this year.
HUD is preparing an Order in Council (Order), under the Severe Weather Emergency Recovery Legislation Act 2023 (SWERLA), to allow specified councils to use a modified version of the Streamlined Planning Process (SPP) to prepare a planning instrument, without the need to apply or receive direction from the Minister for the Environment. This would be a temporary change to support specific local authorities during the recovery from the recent extreme weather events.
If you have thoughts on the Order in Council, or the process that councils will be able to follow to make changes to the planning instrument, please email RMAPlans@hud.govt.nz. Consultation closes 28 July 2023.
